What is creativity?
We often hear the word “creativity” but what does it actually mean? According to Dictionary.com, creativity is “the ability to produce something new through thoughtful designs, planning, or abstract thought.” So, in order to be creative, we have to be able to produce something that is new and hasn’t been done before. But what if we can’t think of anything new? Does that mean we’re not creative? Not necessarily. Creativity isn’t just about coming up with new ideas, it’s also about looking at things in a different way and seeing the potential in something that others might not see. It’s about taking existing ideas and expanding on them or recombining them in a new way.
How to Be More Creative
Now that we know a little bit more about what creativity is, let’s talk about how we can be more creative.
1. Be Open to New Experiences
If you want to be more creative, you need to be open to new experiences. This doesn’t mean that you have to go skydiving or bungee jumping (unless you want to, of course). It can be something as simple as trying a new food, going to a new place, or meeting new people. New experiences give us new ideas to work with. They help us to see the world in a different way and to think about things in a different way. When we’re open to new experiences, we’re more likely to have those “a-ha!” moments when we suddenly see something in a new light.
2. Be curious
If you want to be more creative, you need to be curious. Ask questions. Why is the sky blue? How do birds fly? Why do people behave the way they do? When you’re curious about the world around you, you’re more likely to come up with new ideas and to see things in a different way.
3. Be willing to take risks
If you want to be more creative, you need to be willing to take risks. This doesn’t mean that you should quit your job and move to a new country on a whim (unless you want to, of course). But it does mean that you should be willing to try new things and to step outside of your comfort zone. Taking risks can be scary, but it’s also how we learn and grow. When we take risks, we’re more likely to have new experiences and to learn new things. We’re also more likely to come up with new ideas.
4. Be persistent
If you want to be more creative, you need to be persistent. This doesn’t mean that you should never give up on your ideas. But it does mean that you should keep working at them and refining them. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who have failed the most. They’re the ones who have kept going despite the setbacks. They’re the ones who have persisted in the face of adversity.
5. Be flexible
If you want to be more creative, you need to be flexible. This doesn’t mean that you should be willing to change your plans on a whim. But it does mean that you should be willing to adapt and to change course when necessary. Flexibility is important because the world is constantly changing and we have to change with it. When we’re flexible, we’re able to adapt to new situations and to come up with new ideas.
6. Be passionate
If you want to be more creative, you need to be passionate. When you’re passionate about something, you’re more likely to put in the hard work and to persevere when things get tough. Passion is also contagious. When you’re passionate about something, you’re more likely to inspire others and to get them excited about your ideas.
7. Be patient
If you want to be more creative, you need to be patient. This doesn’t mean that you should wait around for inspiration to strike. But it does mean that you should give yourself time to explore your ideas and to experiment. Rome wasn’t built in a day. And neither are great ideas. They take time to develop and to grow. So be patient and give yourself the time you need to be creative.
